Baby pigs are brought into this world one litter at a time.  These litters usually range in size from 8-15 piglets.  A few days before they are born, the mother (sow) is put into a farrowing crate or stall. These pens keep the piglets safe and warm when they are born, and allow the farmer to monitor the sow and assist in farrowing (birthing).  Until the piglets are 18-21 days old, they have space alongside their mothers' which is heated for their comfort.  In this area they also have continual access to their mothers' milk.
